DAISY Winning Nurse Embodies Compassion

Johnna Askins went beyond the call of duty to ensure that the patient had the antibiotics and emphasized the importance of him taking all the medicine.

Johnna Askins, RN, embodies the Conway Regional value of compassion.

“She is always putting others first over herself. She is very giving and shows compassion, not only to her patients but for everyone she comes in contact with,” writes a co-worker in Johnna’s winning nomination for the DAISY award for exemplary nursing care.

As a case manager, she often helps patients with issues outside the health care they receive in the hospital. Living conditions including factors such as finances and family assistance,  can determine whether patients are re-admitted.

One of those instances helped her earn the DAISY award. “She had a patient who had been admitted several times previously. We had used the Patient Love Fund to pay for his medicine and it was unavailable this time,” read the nomination. After paying for insulin, the patient was out of money for antibiotics. Askins went beyond the call of duty to ensure that the patient had the antibiotics and emphasized the importance of him taking all the medicine.

Johnna has worked for Conway Regional for more than six years, most of them in the Case Management Department.

The international DAISY Award honors nurses who provide exemplary care for their patients. It includes a carved stone statuette, called the “Healer’s Touch,” of a nurse holding hands with a patient, an award certificate, cinnamon rolls, a reserved two-month parking spot, and rewards points.
