What is being done to prevent infection?

At Conway Regional, we implement several measures to help prevent the spread of infections, including:

  • Conway Regional has an infection prevention specialist dedicated to reducing the spread of infectious diseases throughout our facilities.
  • If a patient has an active infection, they receive the appropriate treatment based on their individual medical needs.
  • Once a patient has been designated as a carrier of certain communicable diseases, such as MRSA, they are kept in isolation each time they return to the hospital. Isolation procedures help protect patients, visitors, and staff while preventing the spread of infection. In some cases, patients with weakened immune systems may also require protective isolation. Visitors may be permitted depending on the type of precautions in place. Please check with the patient's nurse before visiting someone in isolation.
  • Patient rooms are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected using established environmental cleaning protocols.
  • Hand hygiene is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infection. We encourage all visitors to clean their hands before and after visiting patients as well. The most effective hand washing involves the vigorous use of antibiotic soap for at least 20 seconds making sure to wash the front and back of your hands and in between your fingers. While hand gel is effective against most communicable diseases, like MRSA, it does not kill stool-based bacteria such as salmonella or c. diff.
  • Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing helps reduce the spread of germs and protects those around you.
