CONWAY, Ark. (KTHV) – One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer.  But Conway Regional Health System is introducing new technology that allows for a more thorough breast exam using 3D mammography.

The most common type of exam is a 2D, but this one will be able to look at the breast in more layers.

While it changes what doctors will be able to see, they say patient experience will stay the same. The use of 3D mammography can increase detection rates of invasive breast cancer by 41 percent compared to 2D imaging, and the number of patient recalls due to false positive reports is also significantly reduced.  

The director of mammography at Conway Regional says this new technology is not only beneficial to the patient, but also the hospital.

"It's more effective in denser breasts and it'll provide a new service to the whole region, all of Faulkner County that we haven't had until now,” said Dr. Dan Clark.

The machine is expected to roll out at the beginning of 2017.
