Critical Care Services

Conway Regional's Critical Care Unit (CCU) is equipped to provide highly specialized care to patients who suffer from a serious injury or illness. Our critical care unit has been in operation for more than 26 years and remains one of the top intensive care units in the central Arkansas area.

While your loved one is there, a multidisciplinary team (physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists) trained in care of critically ill or injured patients will provide continuous observation and monitoring as well as specialized care.

Patients are admitted to CCU from the Emergency Department, an operating room, from another patient care area at Conway Regional or after being transferred from another hospital.

Typical CCU patients may be recovering from:

  • Respiratory issues, such as pneumonia or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Surgery, if the patient's conditions warrants critical care
  • Liver disease
  • Cancer treatment
  • Stroke or other neural related illness
  • Difficult to heal wounds, lacerations and broken bones
  • Multiple complications related to the overall condition of the patient

Admission is based on a physician finding that close observation or specialized monitoring and/or therapy is needed. Once this specialized care is no longer needed, your loved one will be discharged from the CCU to either a regular hospital room or a concentrated care (step-down) unit where modified observation or therapy can be administered.

Patients who are hospitalized for a heart procedure, will receive highly specialized care and monitoring in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU).

Visiting Hours

We welcome and encourage you to visit your loved one in CCU. You play a vital role as a partner with our staff in their recovery. CCU has specficed visiting hours and rules that are strictly followed so that we may provide the best possible care for your loved one. The Visiting Hours page provides specific rules regarding visitation in CCU.

What to Expect During Your Loved One's Stay in CCU:

  • Spokesperson Needed: During visiting hours, the CCU nurses will be available to answer your questions. We ask that one person from each family be appointed as a spokesperson. The spokesperson may call for a condition report and relay information to the other family members between visits.
  • Privacy Laws: Due to federal laws regarding patient privacy, we can only discuss information with the designated spokesperson. You should select a spokesperson by filling out the information slip in the brochure and providing this information to your loved one's nurse.
  • Courtesy Telephone: Please be aware that in CCU, we do not have telephones in patient rooms. A courtesy phone in the waiting room is provided for family/visitor use. The courtesy phone number is (501)450-2165. Please ask family or friends to call you on this line. Families may assist with calls when a volunteer is not present.
  • Cell phones are not allowed in CCU. We ask that all cell phones be turned off upon entering the unit. Pay phones are located in the Cafeteria vending area.
  • The CCU Waiting Room is located across the hall from the main entrance into the CCU. To accommodate all Critical Care families, we ask that a limit of four family members remain in the waiting room. If you wish to visit with additional family members, we suggest that you use the East Lobby, Chapel or Cafeteria. No children under the age of 12 are permitted in the waiting area. If you have young children, please feel free to use the East Lobby, Chapel or Cafeteria.
  • Quiet Hours: Please be considerate of others during this time of concern for their loved ones by observing quiet hours from 10 pm to 6 am. We ask that you respect these hours, understanding that both you and other families need rest during these times.
  • Personal Belongings: No personal bedding (air mattress, cots, sleeping bags, etc.) linens, ice chests/coolers, food products and electrical devices such as radios/CD players, portable televisions and hot plates are allowed in the waiting room.
